He added that it was expected that the current range of services provided under the KNUST e-campus project will be complemented with distance learning, which will leap KNUST into the frontiers of educational excellence.
The KNUST e-campus network will eventually be interlinked with similar networks in Ghana and beyond to enable members of our university community share resources with other educational institutions and thereby create a seamless environment for education and research.
Two other speakers, Mr. Kofi Asante, Administrator of GIFTEL, and Dr. Ben Adu, C.E.O of Engineering System and Services Ltd, were both hopeful that the facility will leap the University to the forefront of ICT. They were of the view that ICT was a social enabler in education, health and poverty reduction. They pointed out that one of the strategies in achieving this was to modernize and expand Ghana’s information and communication infrastructure and services to improve universal access and quality service.
The providers offered free internet access for a day for the first hundred students.
Present at the commissioning were the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Provosts, Deans, Hall Masters, students and other members of the University Community. Also present were Mr. J. Peprah of the National Communications Authority, Dr. Frank Odoom, CEO of Quality Insurance Co. Ltd, Mr. Kwame Osei-Owusu, General Manager, Merchant Bank, Mr. Bennet Kpentey, CEO of Sync Consult Management Consultants, and Dr. F. Sapara-Grant, MD of Universal Telephone Exchange (Gh) Ltd.
