Engineering Systems and Services (ESS) has deployed a wireless internet and voice telephony network to cover the campus of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). The network is the first of its kind in the country. ESS intends to replicate it in all tertiary institutions in Ghana. When completed, this facility will cover and link all the campuses of tertiary institutions to each other to form a national e-campus network.
The e-campus network was launched by the Vice-Chancellor of KNUST at a short but impressive ceremony held at the forecourt of the Independence Hall of the University on Tuesday 13th February, 2007.
In a speech, the Vice-Chancellor said that the project is the first phase of comprehensive Information, Communication & Technology programme, aimed at integrating all educational institutions into the global ICT network with KNUST as the hub. He said that the project will provide the following services: efficient and affordable wireless internet access to all members of the university community including students, lecturers and researchers anywhere on campus and the surrounding vicinity.
Other services include in-room and on-campus voice telephony, where members of the university community, who are signed unto the service, will have access to telephone service anywhere on campus and the surrounding vicinity. These services will be provided at affordable rates to enable all subscribers benefit from this innovation.
